Meeting planning

Identify purpose

First, you will need to decide what kind of gathering you want to hold and what the purpose of the gathering will be.

  • Is it information gathering?
  • Sharing about a specific issue?
  • Mobilizing for a targeted action (e.g. advocacy around a local law or barrier)?
  • Or something else?

Questions to ask yourself
  • What is the topic you want to talk about?
    • Is the topic broad – such as discussing barriers to community living for the disability community?
    • Or narrow – such as informing the community about a new local ordinance that will make changes to sidewalk access?
  • Why are you having this meeting? What would a successful outcome be?
    • Having a lot of attendees?
    • People feeling their voices were heard?
    • Getting a number of people to sign up to action alerts on an issue?
